Hallyu, or the Korean wave, has swept across the world, and India is no exception. In recent years, the popularity of Korean culture in India has skyrocketed, with K-pop music, K-dramas, and Korean cuisine gaining widespread attention among Indian youth. This article explores the phenomenon of Hallyu in India, its cultural impact, and its potential implications for the bilateral relationship between India and South Korea.


One of the most significant drivers of Hallyu in India is the growing popularity of K-dramas. These Korean TV shows, known for their emotional depth and engaging storylines, have captured the hearts of Indian audiences. The first Korean show to be aired in India was ‘Jewel of the Palace’ - a historical drama. Another show called Boys Over Flowers is one of the most viewed Korean drama shows in India till date. With the advent of online streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, K-dramas have become easily accessible to Indian viewers, contributing to their growing popularity. This trend is evident in the growing popularity of K-dramas on Netflix, with viewership in India increasing by over 370% in 2020 compared to the previous year, according to a survey by the Hindustan Times.


Another crucial factor contributing to Hallyu in India is the popularity of K-pop music. K-pop bands like BTS, Blackpink, and EXO have amassed a massive fan following in India, with Indian fans attending overseas concerts, buying merchandise, and engaging with their favorite idols on social media. K-pop music has also led to a growing interest in learning Korean language among Indian youth, with many opting to take up Korean language courses to better understand the lyrics and meaning behind their favorite songs.



Apart from K-dramas and K-pop, Korean cuisine has also become increasingly popular in India. Korean dishes like bibimbap, kimchi, and bulgogi have found their way onto the menus of restaurants across India, with many Koreans as well as Indians opening Korean restaurants in major Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai.


The growing popularity of Hallyu in India has also led to an increase in tourism from India to South Korea. According to the Korean National Tourism Organization, the number of Indian tourists visiting South Korea has increased by more than 15% annually since 2017. This has led to a boost in bilateral trade and investment between the two countries, with India emerging as a significant market for Korean goods.



In conclusion, the phenomenon of Hallyu in India is a testament to the power of cultural exchange in fostering greater understanding and appreciation between nations. It has led to a growing interest in Korean culture, cuisine, and language among Indian youth, paving the way for stronger bilateral relations between India and South Korea.
